Why I chose this race – At the time of booking in May 2015 I thought it would be good to aim to run a 10K. However I have progressed considerably quicker than anticipated so this was my 2nd 10K.
Organisation – Good. Despite entering the race back May only received the race pack 4 days before the race. On the day it was well sign posted and marshalled. There were also plenty of toilets. Runners were penned according to predicted time. I went in the 50-55 minute pen. The start was staggered with the fastest runners starting first, the next group (me) moved to the start line and started a couple of minutes later. Plenty of helpers at the end handing out water bottles and bananas.
Feedback Summary – I entered the race with a few niggling injuries that I thought I could run through. I was aiming for around 52 minutes. I started well, got through the first 3K in just over 15 minutes. Then my right knee started to hurt. In hindsight I should have stopped running but I hobbled on for the remainder of the race in considerable pain. There were a couple of steep hills from around 3.5K to 6K, overall gently undulating and fairly quick, about 90% of the race was on tarmac. The route itself wound through the park, country roads, outlying villages and farmers fields. Finishing time was 54:23 which was a pb by 11 seconds. As a result of not stopping I aggravated whatever injuries I had (big mistake).
Will I be back – Yes – to do myself justice; if I wasn’t injured I could have run around 51 minutes. Gutted!
Tips for next time – stop when injured!
